I hope you are as excited about this year as I am, and if there is anything I can do to make this the best year ever, please let me know.

A few things you need to know about me.

I retired from the Air Force in 1991 after having served 20 years.

I have taught English and 3 other subjects (social studies, reading, and math) at Hahira Middle School since 1996.

My teaching experience also includes over 6 years as a United States Air Force instructor at Keesler AFB where I obtained my Master Instructor certificate while teaching young men and women the basics of air traffic control.

I am highly certified in all subject areas with the exception of science. My educational background also includes an associate degree in air traffic control, an associate degree in instructor technology, bachelor's degree in aerospace science, and masters degree in educational technology.

I have 10 children (all have left home) 21 grandchildren.

I enjoy fishing, gardening, cooking, camping, making music, riding my scooter, and ministering to others.

Grading Policy

Grades are classified into two categories at the middle school level, summative and formative.

Formative Assessments – 40% of GPA Homework, Quizzes, Classwork, Journals, Daily Writing, Notebooks, & Labs

Formative assessment is a part of the instructional process.  It provides the information needed to adjust teaching and learning while they are happening.  In this sense, formative assessment informs both teachers and students about student understanding at a point when timely adjustments can be made.  These adjustments help to ensure students achieve targeted standards-based learning goals within a set time frame.

Summative Assessments – 60% of GPA:  Unit Tests/Performance Assessments, and Projects.

Summative Assessments are given periodically to determine, at a particular point in time, what students know and do not know.  The key is to think of summative assessment as a means to gauge student learning relative to content standards.

The following power points cover most of the literary terms and concepts that are introduced in middle school. Although your child will not be required to know these terms, they are placed here for those student who wish to advance their studies of literary devices they will encounter in their higher education.

Why WIKI?

I have found this website to be user friendly. Although I have a masters degree in technology, I am not comfortable with much of the technology that is being used extensively in the 21st century. I do not do twitter, or Facebook, and I limit my texting.  It will be used to create an electronic writing portfolio of exemplary student work, but most important it will help keep you and your child current on the progress we will make throughout the year and provide helpful resources for making it a successful year.
